Course Schedule

Eligibility: This course is open to students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. level with Physics as their main subject as well as to all engineering students (studying or completed B.E. / B.Tech. level and above) having an aptitude for Astronomy and Astrophysics. Working and retired individuals with the relevant background knowledge may also apply.

Batches:

The number of seats in a batch is limited to 40 ONLY. Admissions will be done on first-come-first-served basis.

Schedule for next batch: 1 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, weekends only (tentative)

Duration:

Online sessions to be held on video conferencing platform
Saturdays and Sundays 2:30 p.m. to 5:40 p.m. covering roughly 40 hours of syllabus and activities in total.

Course Overview


Aim:

The primary aim of this programme is to provide a strong foundation of the fundamentals in Astronomy and Astrophysics among students and individuals having an interest and aptitude for learning. Students of physical sciences and engineering are particularly encouraged to pursue this course as a motivation for careers in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The syllabus for the course and the practical activities are planned as an extra subject beyond the regular University curriculum. The course is conducted completely online on weekends to facilitate participation from across the country and outside the normal college or working hours. The course includes theory classes, practical sessions, and a seminar presentation by the participants at the end of the course. Upon successful completion of the course, the participants will be given a certificate of completion.

The course provides an in-depth exposure of the technical intricacies involved in the study of Astronomy and Astrophysics to such students who are found to possess an aptitude for the subject. This programme is also expected to set a platform for those students who would eventually be seeking higher studies in the subject and aspiring for further research work in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The faculty for this course consists of the permanent teaching staff at the institute as well as the internationally acclaimed scientists and professors of various scientific institutions and research organizations in and around Bangalore.


Coursework


Syllabus:

The syllabus for the online course is framed to cover the basic aspects involved in understanding the astronomical and astrophysical concepts. Brief and tentative lists of topics and practical sessions intended to be taught are given below. Knowledge of college/undergraduate level of physics and mathematics will be beneficial to gain a precise understanding of the concepts covered.

Brief list of topics covered
  • Introduction to naked eye astronomy
  • Types of stars, Measuring brightnesses and distances of stars
  • H-R diagram and its applications, Star clusters, Stellar Evolution
  • Optical Telescopes, Photometry, and Spectroscopy
  • Astronomy in other wavelengths - Radio, Infrared, X-ray etc.
  • Sun, its structure and atmosphere, and Solar System
  • Milky Way and other galaxies, Introductory cosmology
  • Space science programmes
  • Practical Sessions:

    Hands-on activities and exercises (to be performed by the students) are based on the concepts taught in the classroom sessions.

  • Using HR diagram to determine fundamental parameters
  • Applying simple Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques for analysis of astronomical data.
  • Synodic and Sidereal period of the Sun's rotation using Sunspot measurements
  • Radio Astronomy of Pulsars
  • Hubble's law and large scale structure of the universe
  • Spectral Classification of stars
  • Sessions:

    Online classes will be conducted on Saturdays and Sundays only from 2:30 p.m. to 5:40 p.m. The video conferencing platform on which the course will be conducted will be duly informed as the commencement date of the course approaches. The lectures and activities are expected to be covered in approximately 25 to 30 sessions, each of 90 minutes duration, spread over 2 months.

    • As the number of seats is limited to 40, admissions will be made on first-come-first-served basis.
    • Certificates will be issued to the individual students at the end of the course. 

    How to Apply:

    • The bank details to pay the course fee will be displayed only upon submitting the application form. Incomplete forms will be summarily rejected. Application is complete only upon payment of the fees.
