Project Experience:

Application of Approximate Methods to Evolution and Bound-State Problems in Non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics

In this study, a few evolution and bound-state problems in Non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics of academic interest have been solved by making use of certain approximation methods. In particular, three areas have been approached; time evolution of wave packets, the WKB approximation and the variational principle. The time evolution of two wave packets, a square wave packet and a triangular wave packet have been studied. The approach to the solution is rather general and can be applied in principle to find the time evolution of any wave packet. The approach is as follows: The time evolution of a Gaussian wave packet is a standard problem in every textbook of Quantum Mechanics. Thus, the square and the triangular wave packets have been expressed as the sum of a finite number of Gaussian wave packets (greater the number, more the accuracy of the method), solve the Gaussian wave packets individually and consider the sum. The evolution has been subsequently plotted in MatlabTM. The second of the problems consists of solving certain simple bound-state potentials by making use of a new and simpler approximation in the famous WKB method. Here, the potentials have been assumed to be made up of a finite number of equally spaced rectangular steps (greater the number, more the accuracy of the method) and have derived the approximate energies of certain potentials such as the simple harmonic potential, the Quartic potential and the gravitational potential or the double-ramp potential. The third problem deals with using Weinstein’s method which is used to calculate the lower bound of ground state energies of certain bound-state potentials, the upper bound being calculated using the well known Variational method.
